Local world champions invite you to celebrate

Many residents and visitors to Falmouth already know about the town’s gig club’s fantastic double success at the sport’s World Championships on Scillies over the May Day weekend.  If the news somehow didn’t reach you we’re proud to say both our Men’s and Ladies A crews took the title after a long hard winter’s training and a tough weekend racing.   In fact all of our crews performed strongly with 6 in the top 22, a first for any club proving the depth of talent, experience, and sheer determination to be found throughout our members.

None of our success would be possible however without the continued support of all members and many non-rowing friends of the club across the town so we would like to invite anyone with a connection to, or just interested in, the club to join members from winning crews as well as club, novice, and junior representatives, in a celebration of our success for couple of hours at the Watersports Centre on Sunday 22nd May from 12 and find out more of what we get up to.

If you’ve been inspired to give the sport a go, whether you dream of podium glory or simply racing for fun and social rows around our beautiful rivers, come down to one of our Novice sessions.  Run every Wednesday out of the Watersports from 6 until it’s too dark or you’re too tired anyone and everyone is welcome to jump in and experience what it is that gets so many hooked.  Expert coxes and experienced rowers will be on hand to lead you through your first few strokes and coach you along to a level where you can join members for longer training sessions and fun rows.

Juniors are also a vital part of the club, though not the largest contingent they are our world champions of the future.  There are two age categories, 12 to 14 and 14 to 16 and sessions are run every Wednesday and Thursday from 5 at the Watersports.  Our Juniors Cox, Nick Maxted, has years of rowing and coaching experience, and will be available to chat to on 22nd May or can be contacted through our website to find out more. And lastly, but never least, if you already row for one of the many clubs around the Carrick Roads, come along for our summer series of Friday Night Races.  All you need are 6 willing bodies, a competent cox, and a will to win.  Even if you can’t muster a whole crew we may be able to mix you in or loan you a boat so get in touch with club rower’s Captain Martin through the website or come to the shed for 6pm.  Starting from Black Rock at 7pm prompt, the course runs back into the end of the Queens Arm, first flag down this Friday 20th May, see you on the start line!
